What the heck? Showing in this article in the Huffington Post
today is a trailer for a new Quentin Tarantino film, The Hateful
Eight, that shows a poster with a "70mm Super Cinemascope" logo in the
lower right corner. Being over 6 decades old, going to early
Cinemascope films as a kid, and even reading through American
Widescreen Museum, I've never heard of "70 mm Super Cinemascope."
Is it Tarantino trying to be retro-cool, or is another PR guy
relying on people's ignorance and makinbg it all up?
Today,I'll leave this to those more knowledgeable than me to
figure out this one.

He is trying to be retro-cool. It's a 70mm anamorphic blowup from a DI.

I believe "Super Cinemascope" was originally an alternate name for
Cinemascope 55. But I am sure that trademark has long ago fallen into
disuse so it is ripe for the picking.

You are incorrect. QT is shooting is movie on 65mm and releasing in 70mm (and 35mm). Furthermore, I hear the 70mm venues will get a brief exclusivity on the release (talking about retro). Naturally, it will have DCPs for 99% of the venues but this will be another 70mm movie.

What is in a name...I agree he is trying to sound retro-cool but make no mistake...this will be a 65/70mm feature.

However, prior to that (just a couple of months away)...Christopher Nolan's Interstellar was shot in a combination of 35mm, 35mm VistaVision and 70mm IMAX and will also have a 35mm release (2-day exclusive)...I have heard, but cannot confirm, there may be convention 5/70 prints of that as well. There will definitely be IMAX 15/70 prints available for the few IMAX venues that can still run it.

This is great and wonderful news. This being true, though, why are the
publicity people just going on about it being shown in 70mm, when in fact
being shot in 65mm is much more exciting?

These days everybody's exclusivity for everything is brief.... three weeks
later the DVDs will be in the stores... it's really a shame because it does
not give enough of an opportunity to films to get a real buzz.
However, prior to that (just a couple of months away)...Christopher Nolan's=

All through a 2k DI, let me guess?
