Hateful Eight 70mm locations

I am not sure that anyone has posted about this yet, but here is
the list of US locations for the 5/70 release of Hateful Eight
(release date: 12/25). Most of these are temporary installations
by Boston Light & Sound; a few (noted below) are existing 70mm
installations. Most of the temporary installs consist of one
Century JJ, one AW3 platter, and a DTS XD10 or XD20 player.
Prints are being made by Foto-Kem.

All prints will be 5-perf 70mm DTS Ultra Panavision. New lenses
have been made for this screening and are on loan to the theatres
that are screening the film. All lenses and equipment belong to
the Weinstein Company and will go back to them after the screenings.

I can say good things about the AFI Silver, the Somerville Theatre,
and the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Most of these other venues
(especially the temporary installs) are likely to end up with
somewhat questionable operators, many of whom may have no experience
with 70mm.

More information (including non-US locations) is available at

Is there a pool in place for betting on when the first print is destroyed
in a platter mishap?

I am willing to bet that at least one of them gets trashed on or
before the first screening. The platter prints are being shipped
made-up as single rolls of film with black film for a fixed 12-minute
intermission (it will be interesting to see what doors and stairways
the prints don't fit through), so at least there should be minimal
risk of damage in the makeup process. The reel-to-reel prints
are being shipped doubled-up on 70mm reels (five reels for the
187-minute feature).

Another pool that should exist is how many of those 99 screens will
have proper masking for a 2.76:1 picture.

Very interesting.

It's too bad the new "St*r W*rs" will be keeping this one off the only
two west coast screens that can do it justice.

I was just wondering if I should drop this group since I don't recall
seeing much in it for a long-long time.
I count 64 (reminds me of my Commodore ;-D) postings in the
last two years (without yours). Think of it this way:
Let's keep some newsgroups alive!
Their slowness is preferable.

I'm not pleased to see people talking about platter damage.
The plattered print I saw in Sacramento on December 29th was not
damaged at all, though it also wasn't really in focus. Kinda
destroyed the point of 70mm.

Having known in advance that prints were being shipped already built,
I wasn't surprised by the lack of changeover cues. I *was* surprised
by the fact that the (presumed) reel joins were completely invisible
and inaudible. I can't imagine that it was printed as a single large
strip, but it sure played that way.

It was printed in half-reel chunks (R1A, R1B, R2A, R2B, etc.).
These were ultrasonically spliced together. The prints for platter
houses arrived pre-built, with ultrasonic splices between all
segments. The prints for reel-to-reel houses arrived doubled-up
(e.g. "shipping reel 1" consists of R1AB + R2AB), again, with
ultrasonic splices between segments. Those prints do have c/o cues
(scratched Clint-Phare-type cues) at the end of each shipping reel's
worth of film.

The "intermission" reel is just blank film (with DTS timecode, for
some reason). It shows up as "reel 13" on a DTS XD10 or XD20
player. There is no sound during the intermission, aside from
about :45 of singing at the start of R7A before the picture starts.

Road show. The Tower Theater in Sacramento had installed 70mm circa
1986 and had a 70mm festival, but apparently it was removed. Pretty
depressing for an alleged art theater!

H8 may have started a trend. There are now rumors that Warners
may release Batman vs. Superman in 70mm in March.

All of the H8 equipment is now owned by the Weinstein Company, so it
will be interesting to see how that plays out.
