HOW LONG WILL A DIGITAL FILM LAST?

Films/ photos properly cared for can last for hundreds of years but how long will digital last? An article in SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN (April 2011) stated that it is unlikely they will be able to be seen by one's grandchildren. SAMSARA on bluray was mesmerizing (and possibly the best blueray ever) but will it last as long as the 65mm film that it was filmed with?
