A SOLDIER'S PLAYTHING (1930) has finally been released in USA on dvd.It was filmed in 65mm and they used Interlocked Vitaphone discs for the soundtrack during it's original cinema screenings. Only 11 films were made in the widescreen (63.5mm ,65mm and 70mm) process from 1929 till 1931.One is believed to have been lost (FOX MOVIETONE FOLLIES OF 1929). I have 9 of the films on dvd and only missing KISMET (1931) and FOX FOLLIES. I would be interested in buying dvds or videos of those two films if anyone has copies.

Is the source for the DVD 65mm or 35mm?

The aspect ratio listed at Amazon is 1.33:1.

Won't know until the dvd arrives in the mail next week. Probably not from the 65mm print as a dvd has been available for a couple of years from one distributor which sold public domain films. Not sure if the original negative still survives or if there are any 65mm prints available. Maybe they will release BILLY THE KID from the same era. A 70mm print of that not only still exists but is still playable. You can still buy a dvd of that film if you shop around, along with dvds of 9 out of 11 early wide screen films that were not lost. THE BAT WHISPERS and BIG TRAIL Dvds came from restored 70mm prints . BIG TRAIL comes out on bluray soon.I won't bother as I hate westerns (and John Wayne). Will only buy a copy if they have some new extras on the early widescreen era.
